Survey on SD61 Land Sales

The CCA has posted a survey on Facebook regarding the two recent land sales by School District 61 that directly affect school properties within the CCA boundaries.

The first sale of land at Lansdowne Middle School is to provide space for a new francophone school. The second sale of land at the south campus of Lansdowne Middle School – the grounds of the former Richmond Elementary school – is to provide a building site for the Victoria Hospice Society.

Both of these sales have been covered in local newspapers, and news of same has been posted on this site. See Lansdowne Middle School property: a new French school?, Info session: sale of 7.3 acres of land at Lansdowne Middle School, Deadline for Lansdowne Middle School land sale feedback: June 14, and Lansdowne Middle School south campus giving up land to Hospice.

Lansdowne Middle School south campus giving up land to Hospice

The Times Colonist newspaper has reported that the Greater Victoria School District has agreed to sell a portion of the Lansdowne Middle School south campus – formerly Richmond Elementary School – to the Victoria Hospice Society.

Although the TC states the parcel is separated from the larger school property by a stand of trees, they perhaps missed the fact that those trees are shading one of the exposed stretches of Bowker Creek as it wends its way to Oak Bay. A narrow foot bridge connects the to-be-sold parcel from the remaining school property. Let’s hope any future construction there respects, preserves and perhaps improves the area that makes up this waterway as we lose green space to a worthy cause.

For more information on Bowker Creek, please read about the Friends of Bowker Creek Society.

Approvals from further governing bodies have yet to be collected, but will no doubt be provided as requested.

Grooming Bowker Creek for Salmon

The local Times Colonist newspaper has a recent article on the efforts being made to have salmon return to Bowker Creek.

This initial effort won’t directly affect Bowker Creek within the CCA area of Saanich. But if the chum salmon eggs to be planted in prepared gravel beds of Bowker Creek result in hatched fish returning after their years at sea, there’s nothing to say they won’t head a bit further upstream seeking suitable spawning habitat.

The Friends of Bowker Creek Society has created a Bowker Creek Blueprint that spans 100 years.

Bowker Creek provides drainage for much of the Shelbourne Valley. Sadly, it has been covered for much of its length. See map below.

Map image from the CRD’s Natural Area Atlas tool. The daylighted parts of Bowker Creek are shown as light blue within the Bowker Creek watershed. The parts that join these daylighted parts run underground in culverts.
