Event Description:
An innovative all-candidates meeting for Saanich Mayor and Council
For the first time in the history of Saanich, four organizations have joined forces to hold an all candidates meeting: they are three neighbouring community associations:
- Camosun
- Mount Tolmie
- Quadra-Cedar Hill
and the Students’ Society at the College.
Together, we’ll raise key questions on up to ten important key issues, namely:
- sewage and waste water management
- low cost housing, poverty, homelessness
- food security
- Infrastructure renewal and expansion
- transit
- transportation bus and LRT
- municipal governance: mayor vs councillors
- role of community associations in municipal governance
- financing of major works and services, taxation
- parks and recreation (local and regional)
- the Shelbourne Corridor
The meeting will be held at Camosun College, Lansdowne Campus, Young Building, Room 216 on Thursday, November3, 2011 from 6:30 PM to0 9:30 PM. This is a lot of time, but we’ll make sure you enjoy the show and feel enthused at the idea of participating in the upcoming municipal elections.
The meeting will consist of two separate sessions, with a short break between them. The first session will focus on the mayoral candidates. The second session will address all aspiring councillors. Both sessions will be strictly managed and focus on as many as possible of the themes we selected, that will be communicated in advance to the candidates and to the public. We we’ll make sure that the candidates show clearly their positions and intents, without harassing them. We’ll also manage to keep some space and time for free questions from the floor.
The event will be complemented by preliminary info, a live feed on our Camosun Community Association website, opportunity to comment at our CCA website, accessible to every one before, during and after the event. This streaming will make up for the limited capacity of the room: It holds only 180 people…
The master of ceremonies and time keeper is John Schmuck, President of the Quadra-Cedar Hill Community Association. The moderator, Alan Perry, is well know and very capable: he was for a long-time host at Shaw and is a well-known communicator in the Region. We’ll staff the show with volunteers from the four co-hosting organizations.
